CREDANT helps ensure student data is kept private for Stephen S. Wise Temple and Schools

DALLAS –November 7, 2005 – Protecting the sensitive records of students may be a regulatory obligation, but it is a moral one as well. That is why Stephen S. Wise Temple, a synagogue and K-12 school in Los Angeles, has chosen CREDANT® Technologies, the market leader in providing software that enables organizations to control security enterprise-wide for mobile workers, to provide security for its notebook and handheld mobile devices.

“No one wants to be the next headline for not protecting the sensitive information it is charged to keep,” said David Lam, Director of Information Technology for Stephen S. Wise Temple. “More importantly, we are a place of worship and values, so we felt strongly that it was our moral obligation to protect the records of the young minds trusted to our care.”

When they evaluated the potential security risks, Stephen S. Wise Temple administrators knew the mobile devices used by their staff posed a significant security risk. Mobile devices, such as laptops and PDAs, are capable of storing valuable school information and student records, such as addresses, social security numbers, phone numbers and performance records of students. Because California Senate Bill 1386 requires immediate reporting of lost or stolen personal identification information, administrators knew they needed to do something to close the security gap.

“Mobile devices enable our clergy and administrators to be more productive, but with California SB 1386 we had to find a way to give them mobility while making sure our confidential information was properly secured,” adds Lam.

Stephen S. Wise Temple cites CREDANT’s strong security solution, the ability to administer security policies centrally and the functionality that enables ease of use as factors that led to their selection. The Temple also wanted to have centralized policy management and encryption that was FIPS 140-2 compliant. Having the visibility and capability to manage all devices with access to their networks was key; especially making sure important security policies could not be bypassed. They also added that CREDANT’s customer service and support played a key role in their choice.

“Yes, the company we selected had to provide a viable solution to meet the security requirement,” says Lam. “But CREDANT also treated us as a valuable client and gave us a remarkable level of support throughout the implementation. They wanted to make sure we knew how to best use the system and we felt that we would get the kind of support we needed for the long term. That definitely sealed the deal.”

“Stephen S. Wise Temple has set a great example for other educational institutions to follow,” said CREDANT Technologies Founder and CEO Bob Heard. “They have addressed the risk before a breach happens. I wish there was more recognition for proactive approaches like this. Stephen S. Wise has peace of mind, knowing they are doing the right thing. We hope other schools will follow their example and proactively protect their students’ and employees’ privacy.”
