Indianapolis - Sensitive personal information of hundreds of thousands of Hoosiers could be in the hands of thieves. The data is stored on computers stolen from a south side collection agency.

The owner of the company, Central Collection Bureau, is working with police and the Indiana attorney general's office. CCB says it has improved security at its office, but 700,000 names stored on a handful of computers are now in the hands of thieves.

Eight computers, once the backbone for Central Collection Bureau, were stolen from the company's offices on March 21, 2008.

Inside the computers are the names of hundreds of thousands of people, as well as their names, addresses, Social Security numbers and in some cases medical codes. Every name is a customer or a patient.

The collection company was hired by hundreds of doctors and even utility companies to collect on delinquent bills.

"But obviously we need to be notifying those that could have potentially had information on there. We are recommending that they put credit freezes on or at least monitoring on their credit reports," said Chet Klene, Central Collection Bureau.

Klene says all the computers need passwords to break in to the info..

"Our server was password protected. We have obviously spoken to some IT people who feel that a good computer hacker could get through those passwords," he said.

The names in the computers are of those that have been turned over to collection. Central Collection Bureau is asking if you believe you have been affected to call 317-887-5165 or 1-800-878-5165 or email CCB for more information about these options. You can also visit CCB's site.
